Hatfield, Some Girls To Debut At Conference

Aug 9, 2002—The best-known performer at this year's Midwest Music Summit is Juliana Hatfield — past leader of the Blake Babies, former cover girl for Spin magazine and still-trusty link to college rock's golden era.

Hatfield will unveil her new musical project, Some Girls, tonight at the Patio.

The group's local ties couldn't be stronger, as Hatfield is joined by Indiana musicians Freda Love (drummer with the Mysteries of Life, ex-Blake Babies) and Heidi Gluck (bass player with the Pieces).

The spark for Some Girls, Hatfield says, was a Blake Babies reunion tour in 2001.

"That really made me remember how fun it was to play with Freda," she says. "I just thought it would be really good to do something with her that wasn't the Blake Babies."

Some Girls, which Hatfield describes as "groovier than my music," recorded an album this spring at Bloomington's Echo Park Studios.

Regarding Gluck, Hatfield sees a star in the making.

"I'm afraid that once we get her out there on tour, people are going to see how great Heidi is and then steal her away," Hatfield says.

"I'm afraid Courtney Love is going to see her and steal her," she adds with a laugh.
